    ¿Qué Pasa?

One full year has passed since my last update, dear readers, but as you all know this one year has been 5 years, or 6 months, depending on the day. For months Harry has been in a mild panic over wanting to check on the boat but not feeling able to pull away from his work projects to do so. A few weeks ago, I finally said, “I’ll just go”, and last week, off I went. On July 1 I flew to Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and rented a car to drive to the yard in Guaymas. Though in your head you know the boat is still there and likely untouched,…

Cruising in the Time of COVID

After a tumultuous decision to launch the boat without going back to pick-up Tuxie and drop-off the van, into the Sea of Cortez we went. There’s a boat parked near the launch ramp named “Three Hour Tour” – a subtle warning perhaps? The “what-if?” list was long…what if someone got sick at home and we couldn’t get back? What if the locals bar us from coming ashore for food? What if Mexico shuts down completely and things really get nuts? What if one or both of us gets sick? Other boats were launching too with all of the same worries, but we were all telling ourselves we were making the…

    Corona Run 2020

The Clash song "Should I Stay or Should I Go" was playing on repeat in my head as we made a difficult decision back in April. Here's a VERY tardy post about the hand we were dealt as Corona was hitting Mexico (not the beer, the other Corona) :-)

    Off-Season Stories

Exactly five months ago, we left Solla in Guaymas, Mexico and returned to California. We had planned to be back from July to late October. But as they say, all cruisers’ plans are written in sand at low tide, and we’re still weeks away from returning South. We all miss the boat terribly (Tuxie misses the fresh fish) and winter storms are chilling and depressing, but commitments made cannot be broken regardless of the pesky little wildfire* that got in the way. The summer (and fall) was a mixed bag for us both with highlights, lowlights and a whole lot in between.

What do you guys do all day?

We just did another 2-week off-the-grid jaunt, between La Paz and Puerto Escondido (south of Loreto), along a rather isolated stretch of Baja. No phones, wifi, grocery stores, and few boats, but several islands and roughly 115 miles of gorgeous coastline. 2 weeks? 14 days?? “What do you guys do all day every day?” Well, let me tell you. 😊

A Few Troubles in Solla Sollew

In the Dr. Seuss book after which our boat is named, Solla Sollew is a place where there are no troubles, or at least very few. Well, we’ve had a few troubles, and in the world of boats, they are unfortunately not “very few”. For short attention spans, I will skip to the end and tell you that we are temporarily repaired, back in the water, and have options for the next round of repairs in 6-9 mos., after a season cruising in Mexico.
